<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor for an automatic door without causing erroneous operation. <P>SOLUTION: A light emitting diode 26 substantially horizontally projects an infrared ray toward a passerby going to the automatic door. A position detecting element 30 receives the light reflected by the passerby 34. An opening signal for opening a door 10 is outputted on the basis of an output value of the position detecting element 30. The diode 26 and the position detecting element 30 are substantially aligned with the height direction of the passerby, and are mutually arranged in close vicinity in a row.
