PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct injection internal combustion engine installing an injector by tilting it for a central axis of a cylinder and capable of forming a lump of stratified air-fuel mixture having proper size and air-fuel ratio while preventing reduction of degree of stratification of air-fuel mixture. SOLUTION: In this direct injection internal combustion engine, the injector 10 is installed on an injector installation shaft 15 inclined for the central axis 9 of the cylinder. A cavity 14 is provided on a crest face 13 of a piston, and its bottom face (bottom face of the cavity) 14a is formed by substantially vertical face for the central axis 9 of the cylinder. Height of a peripheral wall 14b on a side where an angle formed by the bottom face 14a of the cavity and the injector installation shaft 15 is large is larger than that of a peripheral wall 14c on a side where the angle is small.
