911,199. Controlling nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 29, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 23593/61. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXX] A drive mechanism for the control rod of a nuclear reactor comprises a carriage 1 with a shank 2 for supporting the control rod housed in a deformable guide tube 4 projecting beneath the concrete shield 3 of the reactor, local deformation of the guide tube 4 being caused by rollers 11, 12 carried by arms 13, 14 pivoted to a plate 6 and held against the guide tube 4 by electromagnets 17, 18 so as to move the carriage 1 when the plate 6 is caused to move by means of a screw 7 engaging a threaded nut 8 carried by the plate 6. Should a rapid increase in the reactivity of the reactor occur, the current supply to the electromagnets 17, 18 is interrupted with the result that the arms 13, 14 and their rollers 11, 12 are released and the carriage 1 together with the control rod falls under its own weight, the absorbent part of the control rod entering the reactor core to stop the fission reaction. The invention is described with particular reference to reactors of the swimming pool type, the control rods of which include both an absorbent part and an active part. |
