The invention comprises water-insoluble disazo-dyes which correspond to the general formula in which X represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group, Y represents a hydrogen or halogen atom and R represents a radical of the benzene or naphthalene series which may contain substituents other than sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups and a process for the preparation thereof wherein a tetrazonium compound of a diamine of the general formula where X and Y have the meanings given above is coupled in substance or on a substratum with an appropriate pyrazolone derivative. Examples are furnished. Substrata employed in examples include chalk and aqueous aluminum hydroxide. Some products are prepared in the presence of emulsifiers such as resin soap and the reaction product of oleyl alcohol and ethylene oxide. The products are suitable for colouring lacquers, artificial resins, textiles and paper.
