A programming system for controlling the movement of the back gauge of a guillotine type paper cutter comprises a magnetic tape which travels with the back gauge and upon which sequential signals are recorded. Each signal effects deceleration of the gauge when it passes a first head, and subsequently reaches a second head to stop the gauge whereupon a cut is made by a descending knife. Each slow-head signal is fed into a store, and each such signal is normally cancelled when the corresponding cut is made as the signal passes the stop-head. After a cut is made, the gauge is reversed at high speed unless the recorded signals follow each other closely so that an uncancelled signal is retained in the store, the gauge then being reversed at low speed. Initially, clutch solenoid 105 is energized for low-speed operation of the gauge, and, at the end of a period determined by time delay relay CR5, clutch solenoid 110 is energized for moving the gauge at high speed. When a signal reaches head 10, the gauge is returned to the low-speed condition, and solenoid 82 is energized to store the signal and open contacts 55 in series with high-speed relay CR4. When the signal reaches head 8, the gauge is stopped. A solenoid 67 is not energized to remove a stored signal unless the delay period of relay CR5 has expired so that the gauge is reversed at low speed when the recorded signals follow each other closely. Indefinite slow running is prevented by time delay relay CR 25 adapted to energize solenoid 91 and remove all signals from the store. The storage device comprises a differential gear having a planet wheel biased to a central position and adapted to operate a cam for opening contacts 55. The planet wheel co-operates with a pinion stepped by a double pawl actuated by solenoid 67. Another pinion is actuated by solenoid 82, whilst solenoid 91 is adapted to bring the planet wheel back to the central position. The solenoid 82, when energized, tends to separate contacts 55, whilst solenoid 67 reverses the planet gear and permits the contacts to approach one another.</p>
