A starter pinion 16, mounted on a coarse thread on a sleeve 15 connected through a one-way clutch 18 to a shaft 21 splined to the starter motor drive shaft 10, is moved axially to engage the starter ring 38 by an electromagnet 27 and the splines 22 of the shaft 21 are narrower than their co-operating grooves 13 to permit slight relative rotation between the shafts 21, 10. The electromagnet armature 29, energized by closing switch 36, is connected by a lever 26 to a sleeve 24 on shaft 21 and also operates a switch 31 to close the starting motor circuit at the end of its travel. Upon closing of the switch 36, the lever 26 moves shaft 21 and sleeve 15 to move pinion 16 into engagement with starting ring 38, the switch 31 closing to energize the starter motor to rotate shaft 10 when the pinion is in full engagement. If the teeth lock and prevent the pinion moving into engagement, shaft 15 continues its movement to the left through distance b, Fig. 3, and due to the pinion being held stationary, the coarse pitch thread produces rotation of the sleeve 15 and shaft 21 in an opposite direction to their normal rotation, whereby the splines 22 move freely within the grooves 13, to take up the lateral lost motion, against the force of a torsion spring 23. Upon further axial movement of the sleeve 15 to the left through a distance c, the resultant rotation of sleeve 15 and shaft 21 is transmitted to the shaft 10 which is moved angularly through a small angle. Upon release of switch 36, the parts are returned to their initial position but, due to the angular movement of shaft 10, the pinion 16 will be in a slightly different angular relation to the starter ring 38, whereby if switch 36 is again operated the pinion will probably move freely into engagement with the starter ring. |
