Disclosed are ethene-containing solutions and the use thereof in methods of therapy and prophylaxis. Specifically provided are storage stable solutions comprising ethene solubilised in a suitable liquid. Methods of therapy and prophylaxis contemplated include direct and indirect action against disease and microorganisms, as well as methods for improving metabolic function and priming or causing a host to mount a protective response against disease or microorganisms. In particular, improvement in metabolic function is achieved other than through the exertion of a direct antimicrobial effect, and includes improvements such as enhancement of the immune system, lowering of body temperature, lifting of depression and reduction in lymphatic node swelling. Further, the treatment of diseases or infections other than through exerting a direct antimicrobial effect are disclosed, particularly viral infections, and includes treatment of HIF, hepatitis, glandular fever, cancer and Herpes simplex virus. In addition such medicaments are useful in promoting a host to mount a protective response such as immune responses, humoral immune responses, healing effect and increased enzyme production.
