The method involves projecting balls on a welding zone (7) of a steel plate (2) for forming a porous layer (6) that is made of inert material. The welding zone is covered with the porous layer. Plates (1, 2) are welded using laser energy beam. Sides of the plates are coated with a zinc layer (3) whose evaporating temperature is lower than melting temperature of the plates to be welded. An independent claim is also included for a device for welding two metallic units.
