Processes for making and packaging food slices consisting of two or more food items, such as peanut butter and jelly, and the resulting packaged portions are disclosed. The food items are passed through extrusion tubes 40, 41 which terminate immediately above flattening belts 37 which control the product thickness. At this point packaging machine 25 provides the plastic film to form a wrapped ribbon 33 of product, which is then conveyed through cooling bath 50. Studded drums 60a, 60b, 60c, pre-crimp and heat seal before slicing is performed in order to create individual portions of product. Product formulations which optimise product stability and minimise water migration between the different food items, and methods for providing these formulations are described.
