The apparatus has a tensioning apparatus (90) coupled to a compression membrane (100) to apply a tensile force to the membrane for placing the membrane in a taut condition during an imaging process. A support frame (106) supports an end of the membrane and the apparatus (90). The apparatus (90) has a tensioning device (104) situated on one side of the frame to apply the force along an axis perpendicular to the frame side. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a method of compressing tissue to be scanned for medical imaging (B) a medical imaging equipment having an apparatus for compressing tissue to be scanned for medical imaging.
