Compositions and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of herpes simplex virus infection using immunogneic portions of an HSV antigen

An isolated peptide consists of an immunogenic portion of a HSV UL46 antigen wherein the antigen comprises an amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:15 and the immunogenic portion is selected from the SEQ ID NO: 27-31 and 59-62. The polypeptide can be used in pharmaceutical composition useful for stimulating an immune response and antibodies that specifically bind the polypeptide can be used in methods for detecting HSV infection in samples from patients. Also described is incubating antigen presenting cells or peripheral blood cells, such as T cells, in the presence of the polypeptide and then incorporating the cells into a medicament for treating HSV.
