Isolated peptides capable of binding HLA DR1, DR4 and DR7 having 11 to 20 amino acids, wherein at least 9 residues consist of a sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:18, 20 or 23, are described. These peptides and substantially pure HLA pan DR-binding peptides having the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NOs: 2-8 or 9 can be used in compositions for modulating the immune response to treat or prevent immune-mediated diseases, such as an immune response associated with an infectious disease, immune mediated cancer and auto-immune disease
