The method involves integrating ionization signals over two sampling windows to produce two integration ionization values. Peak of each signal is detected over respective sampling windows to produce two peak ionization values. The signals are conditioned by an analog circuit (310) using pulse width modulation. An engine diagnostic routine is performed with the values by a power train control module (350). Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a computer system for performing an engine diagnostic routine (B) a computer-readable medium whose contents cause computer system to perform an engine diagnostic routine.
