A hardened resin composition containing glass fibres embedded therein is produced by curing a mixture containing glass fibres and an olefinic polyester together with an itaconic ester in the presence of a catalyst, the ester being present in such an amount that the hardened product has a refractive index equal to that of the embedded glass fibres. An unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene and a substance to decrease the dichroism and increase the transparency, e.g. ethyl acetate, acetone or dimethyl sulphone may also be present. The itaconic ester may be the dimethyl or di-n-butyl ester and may be present in the proportion of 10 to 50% based on the amount of polyester and copolymerizable monomer. The polyester may be from maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and ethylene or propylene glycol-the phthalic anhydride may be replaced by isophthalic acid or endo-dichloromethylene tetrachlorophthalic acid. The catalyst may comprise methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and, as promoter, cobalt octoate. |
