The barbecue interior is divided into two zones, namely a direct contact grill zone comprising 45% of the total grill surface area and an indirect contact grill zone comprising 65 % of the total grill surface area. This indirect contact zone is used for baking, keeping food warm, smoking or steaming. The optionally removable charcoal basket (8) is designed to be releasably suspended from a fixed shelf construction (10) inside the barbecue casing (12) underneath the grill. Worktop panels (16.1) can be releasably mounted in the barbecue frame (16) in order to convert it into a desk, workbench or other work area. The height of the frame can be altered via individually height adjustable legs.
