PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of a gear type transmission of which shift feeling is improved by restricting rapid change of rotation speed of synchronizing side by instantly actuating a retarder mounted on a large vehicle and the like when a synchronizer sleeve gets over a synchronizer ring. SOLUTION: At the time of transmission synchronization of the gear type transmission 14 equipped with a synchronizing mechanism, a displacement signal from a displacement sensor 18 for detecting displacement from a neutral position of the synchronizer sleeve is monitored. When the displacement signal reaches a predetermined value, the synchronizer sleeve is judged to have gotten over the synchronizer ring and shifted to a process mating with a synchronized side spline and an actuating signal for instantly actuating the retarder is output to a retarder controller 22.
