PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt-type continuously variable transmission for a vehicle capable of calculating a gear shift ratio at a very low car speed without increasing the number of sensors, and determining the rotating direction. SOLUTION: This continuously variable transmission comprises a pulse generating means 100 for generating pulses by detecting the change of the shape of an outer face of a movable sheave 39 of a pulley 26, the outer face has a specific shape part wherein an interval between parts corresponding to the falling of pulses when observed from the rotating direction of the pulley 26 is changed corresponding to the axial movement of the movable sheave 39, and an interval between the parts corresponding to the raising of the pulses is constant regardless of the axial movement of the movable sheave 39, and further a means for determining at least one of a rotating speed and a gear shift ratio of the pulley on the basis of the interval T1 of falling pulses generated by the pulse generating means.
