Domestic garbage dumped on to a series of rotary shafts equipped with combing discs arranged in staggered fashion is broken up and the fibrous and powdery material discharged by gravity for collection below the combing discs while the rejected solid objects are conveyed to the discharge end of the apparatus. Pivoted arms (28), Fig. 6 (not shown) are mounted above the combing discs to restrain bulky fibrous material. To prevent rejects from falling through the combing discs, there is provided a grid (26), Fig. 9 having openings (27) which correspond in shape to the discs. The combing discs are driven through gearing at equal or unequal speeds in the same or opposite direction by a pair of motors 7 disposed one on each side of the apparatus which may be moved as a whole along a track 4 formed on the edges of an outrigger 5. The combing discs are mounted in staggered fashion on square-sectioned shafts and each may be made of (a) two metal cups pressed together and provided with peripheral teeth and projections on their oblique faces, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), (b) two polygonal plates welded together so that their corners project, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), (c) a polygonal plate provided on each side with projecting bars, Figs. 12, 13 (not shown), (d) a disc of circular saw-like shape. Fig. 15 (not shown) or (e) a disc formed of arms which are rectangular, Fig. 14 (not shown), have terminal teeth and side projections. Fig. 16 (not shown) or shaped as semi-hexagons and have side projections, Fig. 17 (not shown).</p> |
