<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrophilic material which is used as a material for medical equipment and its manufacturing process. <P>SOLUTION: The manufacturing process for the hydrophilic material comprises a step in which chitosan is introduced to the surface of the material via a spacer, a step in which the chitosan is treated with concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic acid or sulfuric anhydride, or a step in which the chitosan is treated with phosphorus oxychloride or phosphoric acid, and a step in which the treated material is neutralized with ammonia or an amine compound. Also the invention relates to a manufacturing process for the hydrophilic material which comprises a step in which chitosan is treated with concentrated sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and chlorosulfonic acid or sulfuric anhydride, or a step in which the chitosan is treated with phosphorus oxychloride or phosphoric acid, a step in which the chitosan is introduced to the surface of the material via a spacer, and a step in which the treated material is neutralized with ammonia or an amine compound.
