PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform character recognition of a predetermined area in a photographed image and display it.

SOLUTION: A CCD camera 29 picks up the image of an object and stores the acquired image data in a memory 32. A display image generator 33 reads out the image data stored in the memory 32 and displays it in an LCD 23. Viewing the display, a user operates an operation section 35 and selects a start point and an end point of the image of a recognition object. An image processing/character recognition section 37 carries out character recognition of the selected image area, and stores the recognition result in the memory 32. The display image generator 33 reads out the character string data of the character recognition result stored in the memory 32, and displays it on the LCD 23. This invention can be applied to a personal digital assistant device such as a mobile phone.
