A recording apparatus capable of reducing occurrences of smear, bleeding around an image border between black and another color, and the like, thereby allowing black characters and black images to be recorded with a high definition. The apparatus extracts, from each of the pixels constituting a black image, black near-by pixels that are black pixels adjacent to that pixel, and color near-by pixels that include color-ink-recorded pixels adjacent to that pixel, and produces color ink data so as to apply a color ink to the black near-by pixels or color near-by pixels at a particular ratio. The original data and produced color ink data are used to perform a recording, thereby suppressing occurrence of smear and bleeding.
