999,177. Steering vehicles. B.R.D. CO. Ltd. April 30, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 4151/63. Heading B7H. In a vehicle, all the wheels of which are driven and steerable, the rear wheels being lockable parallel to or at an angle to the longitudinal vehicle axis. An interlock is provided to prevent use of other than low or reverse gears unless the rear wheel steering is locked. Preferably the front wheels and rear wheels are driven by two independent motors. The rear wheels are locked when end 31 of bell-crank lever 27 engages detent 28, 29 or 30 of arm 20, preventing movement of lever 35 and wheels 14. Detent 29 holds the wheels 14 in a straightahead position and detents 28, 30 hold the wheels turned through 45 degrees. When the rear engine ignition is switched on, releasing solenoid lock 17, handle 18 may be pulled actuating Bowden cable 19 to close together the arms 20, 21, releasing end 31 from detent 29 and engaging the centre pivot 26 of bell-crank 27 between detents 23, 24 so that steering movements of the front wheels are transmitted to the rear wheels. Closing of the arms 20, 21 draws shields 40, 41 over the gear-change gate, limiting gear lever movements to bottom and reverse gears (Fig. 3, not shown). |
