[Also in Division B3] A device for moulding chain links comprises a mould block assembly 9 which includes four movable mould elements, which when in moulding position define a moulding cavity 15 for forming a chain link K and a link holding cavity 16 which holds the finished chain link in a position in which it loops around the moulding cavity 15. Preferably a clamping head 10 is arranged below the assembly 9 and includes four clamping jaw elements, biased inwardly by annular springs 11, to position the finished link. In operation a new chain link K is injection moulded in cavity 15, the injection nozzle 5 is retracted, the mould 9 opened, the chain is drawn downwardly by sprocket wheels 12 through the clamping head 10 by a distance of one link, the clamping head is turned by 90 degrees, and the jaws of the mould are closed again. The chain link just moulded is thus positioned in holding cavity 16, and the procedure is repeated, except the clamping head 10 is in this instance rotated 90 degrees in the opposite direction. The injection machine includes a nozzle slidable in part 3c of the injection cylinder 3, and rigidly connected to a cross member 6. Two guide rods 8 are rigidly mounted on member 6 but slide in a cross member 7 rigidly connected to the injection plunger 2. As the plunger is retracted, when the member 7 engages abutments 8a on the rods 8, the nozzle is retracted, and engages needle 18 of a valve 4 to stop flow of material. When plunger 2 is moved down, the nozzle is forced down into contact with the injection passage 20, 21 of the mould 9, by pressure of the material. A suitable programming control may be provided, so that the apparatus is operated automatically.
