998,081. Jointing by rolling; producing composite sheets; welding by pressure. COMPOSITE METAL PRODUCTS Inc. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 15, 1962], No. 30317/63. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. A method of forming a composite metal strip comprises the steps of removing, as by abrasive grinding wheels 15, and 16, all oxides and foreign matter from strips 13 and 14 to be joined, passing the strips through separate furnaces 17 and 18, having protective atmospheres at temperatures selected to give desired physical properties to the finished product, bringing the cleaned surfaces together, in a protective atmosphere by rolls 20, and roll bonding the composite in a stand 21. The strips are, for example, 3003 A151 aluminium and 304 A151 stainless steel, the physical properties of the composite being controlled by adjusting the temperatures of the strips to be above their stress relieving temperatures, or recrystallization temperatures, or, in the case of aluminium, to be at room temperature. The protective atmosphere may be a mist, a reducing atmosphere or a vacuum. A third furnace may be employed to form a composite of aluminium sandwiched between stainless steel. |
