A machine tool has a base member and a movable member thereon, a cooling system for supplying fluid coolant to an operation on a workpiece comprising a sump and a pump to take fluid from the sump, a fluid trough in the base member completely surrounding the movable member, the outer boundary of said trough being defined by a continuous upstanding flange, means defining a gutter outside the flange and surrounding said trough, an inner skirt and an outer skirt connected to and extending around the movable member in spaced relation to straddle said flange, said inner skirt extending below the level of fluid in the trough in any position of the movable member between extreme positions to define a seal between said base member and said movable member, said outer skirt extending over the flange to minimize entry of foreign matter into the trough, an inlet at the bottom of the trough, and a conduit connecting said inlet to said pump to continuously circulate fluid coolant up through said trough to flush any foreign matter which may enter the trough and settle to the bottom thereof, up over said flange and into said gutter. A grinding machine has a base 10 on which is mounted a workpiece support 11 having secured thereto a pair of shoes 12 to hold a workpiece 13. A grinding wheel 19 has its spindle rotatably supported by a wheelhead 17 and driven, through belts 23, by a motor 21 mounted on the wheelhead. The wheelhead has a hub 16 keyed to a pivot shaft 15 rotatably supported in bearings 14 in the base. The interior of the wheelhead has a compartment 24 completely enclosed except for an opening 25 at the bottom thereof. The grinding wheel 19 is mounted in a separate compartment 26 having an opening at the forward end through which the wheel extends for contact with the workpiece. For effecting pivotal movement of the wheelhead to produce advance and retraction of the grinding wheel relative to the workpiece, worm wheel 30 rotatably mounted in the base threadedly receives axially movable shaft 31 engaged with the lower arm of crank member 32 pivotally mounted at 33 in upstanding portion 10a of the base. The upper arm of the crank member 32 is engaged by piston-rod 34 extending out through opening 35 in base portion 10a and connected to rapid advance piston 36 slidably received in cylinder sleeve 37 mounted in the wheelhead. The actuating mechanism is wholly or partly mounted in compartment 28 in the base totally enclosed except for opening 35. Rapid initial advance of the grinding wheel is effected by admitting pressure fluid to chamber 41 above piston 36; thereafter, rotation of worm wheel 30 by a motor-driven worm slowly advances the grinding wheel. Forward and rearward positions are determined by the engagement of buttons on wheelhead flange 40 with buttons 38, 39 on base portion 10a. To protect the motion transmitting mechanism from the grit of the grinding operation, a trough 45 bounded by continuous inner and outer walls 46, 47, contains liquid. A continuous skirt 48 connected to wheelhead 17 completely surrounds wheelhead opening 25 and depends into trough 45. To minimize the amount of grit entering trough 45 a second skirt 49 is connected to wheelhoad 17. -Liquid from a sump is continuously supplied to the trough by a motor-driven pump through a filter and rate control valve, gooseneck passage 57, in wall 47, and port 58. Liquid continuously overflowing over wall 47 spills into gutter 59 connecting by drainage trough 60 to the sump. Removable plug 61 in wall 47 permits drainage of liquid from trough 45 for removal of any sludge not flushed out by the continuous circulation of liquid. The liquid is coolant which is also supplied by the pump in the sump through a flow control valve to a nozzle 64 on wheelhead 17. In a modification, the wheelhead slides on the base and is moved by a screw. |
