PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device and a method for drastically shortening a processing time required for suitably retrieving and reproducing picture data because all picture data does not need to be retrieved when picture data recorded in a recording medium is retrieved and reproduced. SOLUTION: A control file including a data stream constituted of reference information indicating reference destination of the picture data recorded in a recording medium 1006 is generated by a file processing device 1005, picture data indicated by the reference information included in the prescribed control file are reproduced separately or successively. The file processing device 1005 makes the picture data groups based on attribute information, generates the data stream constituted of the reference information indicating reference destination of all picture data included in each group, and generates the control file including the data stream generated for each group of one or more.
