PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printing method exhibiting high productivity by solving a problem that productivity is low or the number of images being formed per unit time is small because a transfer image and a positional mark are formed alternately in the longitudinal direction of an intermediate transfer sheet, and a problem that use efficiency of an ink sheet and an intermediate transfer sheet is low or the number of images being formed per one roll of the intermediate transfer sheet 1 is small. SOLUTION: Monocolor inks BK, C, M and Y of black, cyan, magenta and yellow arranged repeatedly in the longitudinal direction of an ink sheet 2 are transferred, respectively, in one image forming area only once to form a color transfer image laminating a plurality of monocolor images on an intermediate transfer sheet 5, and then the transfer image is transferred, in one go, to a printed matter 13 by means of an impression thermal transfer roller 11 thus forming a required color image on the printed matter 13. In such a thermal transfer priting method, a thermal print head 8 transfers the same monocolor ink BK from an ink sheet 2 to the intermediate transfer sheet 5 thus forming a position mark 5BK when a monocolor image BKI is formed in the image forming area 5A of the intermediate transfer sheet 5 by transferring the first monocolor ink BK of the ink sheet 2. The position mark 5BK is formed on the outside of the image forming area 5A at a part located in the rear of the front end of each image forming area 5A and in front of the rear end thereof.
