The invention relates to a method during which exhaust is retained inside the combustion chamber (7) of a combustion engine (1) and is compressed during a charge cycle, whereby a first quantity of fuel is injected into the retained exhaust by means of a direct fuel injection (8). A second quantity of fuel is subsequently fed to the combustion chamber (7) whereby obtaining a homogeneous fuel/air mixture inside the combustion chamber (7). An auto-ignition time of the fuel/air mixture formed by the first and second quantities of fuel is set according to a ratio of these first and second quantities of fuel.
