<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly set various control parameters by highly accurately detecting the environment in which an image forming apparatus, such as an electrophotographic copying machine or printer, is installed. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a cooing fan 32 which cools the inside of the apparatus, and an ambient air temperature detection device 33, as an environmental detection sensor, which detects the environment in which the apparatus is installed. The ambient air temperature detection device 33 is disposed in the vicinity of the cooling fan 32, and alters control parameters for each of the parts of the apparatus on the basis of the detection information of the ambient air temperature detection device 33. The cooling fan 32 starts to operate in response to the input of an instruction to form images. After a predetermined length of time has elapsed from the start of the operation of the cooling fan 32, the environment in which the apparatus is installed is detected by the ambient air temperature detection device 33. The cooling fan 32 is stopped for the operation standby period of the apparatus.
