PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable wavelength laser, capable of easily and suitably controlling oscillation wavelength, and to provide a method for controlling the variable wavelength laser. SOLUTION: The variable wavelength laser is provided with a phase control unit 11 for controlling the phase of laser light resonated in a resonator, by controlling the refractive index of a waveguide constituting a waveguide integrated part 2, on the basis of detection results of respective photodetectors 10A, 10B. The phase control unit 11 controls the refractive index of the waveguide by feedback control so that the ratio of luminous intensity detected by the photodetector 10B to luminous intensity detected by the photodetector 10A becomes a previously found reference value. Although a part of the laser light outputted from the resonator is applied to the photodetector 10A, as it is a part of laser light outputted from the resonator is applied to the photodetector 10B passing through an etalon 5B. The period of transmission wavelength of the etalon 5B is twice the period of the transmission wavelength of an etalon 5A. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
