PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine that can gently wash delicate woollen or silk clothing without causing damage such as cloth damage or shrinkage and effectively wash without causing washing irregularities. SOLUTION: The washing machine performs the combination of a swinging washing process in which a control means controls the rotation of a rotary drum 1 at an angle smaller than 180 degrees in the normal and reverse directions by raising a water level in stages and a reversal process in which the control means intermittently controls the rotation angle of the rotary drum to 180 degrees or higher during the swinging washing process, and varies the period of performance of the reversal process in accordance with a water level sensed by a water level sensing means.
