PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-base pigment ink comprising a self-dispersible pigment which is excellent in reliability such as long preservation and jet stability, and gives excellent density and dignity in printing.

SOLUTION: The water-base pigment ink comprises at least a self-dispersible carbon black and a water-soluble organic solvent, wherein the self-dispersible carbon is produced through a process 1 for oxidizing carbon black and a process 2 for coupling hydrophilic groups with a surface to put a phenylene group therebetween by the azo-coupling method.
