PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate assembly and replacement of a brake plate. SOLUTION: This starter has a motor started by flow of current in an armature based on ON operation of an electromagnetic switch, a pinion shift lever driven by corresponding to electromagnetic switch ON operation, a pinion engaged with a link gear of an engine by corresponding to driving of the pinion shift lever while turning by corresponding to start of the motor, and a clutch in which either of an output shaft side of the motor and a pinion shaft side has double the number of spline bars and which has a stopper mechanism having such form that utilizes double the number of spline bars for travel in its axial direction and is spline-connected.
