<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a luminant having a luminescence center which consists of a rare earth element and is introduced into alumina; and a luminant produced thereby. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the luminant, of which the host crystal is α-alumina and the luminescent center is a rare earth element, uses a sol-gel method and comprises the following: a hydrolysis step for hydrolyzing an organometallic compound of aluminum, a colloidal solution formation step for converting a hydrolyzate yielded by the hydrolysis step into a colloidal solution, a step for adding the rare earth element, a wet alumina gel formation step for converting the colloidal solution into a wet alumina gel, a dry alumina gel formation step for converting the wet alumina gel into a dry alumina gel, and a firing step for firing the dry alumina gel in a vacuum atmosphere, in an inert gas atmosphere, or in a reducing gas atmosphere.
