Guidewire (20, 20a, 20b) for use in body cavity irrigation devices includes an elongate, resilient shaft (24, 24a, 24b) adapted to pass in an interior of or along an irrigating tube (14) and a bulbous enlargement (26, 26a, 26b) arranged at a distal end of the shaft (24, 24a, 24b). The bulbous enlargement (26, 26a, 26b) has a smooth, arcuate outer surface to prevent perforation of the walls of the body cavities in which it moves. For colonic irrigation, the guidewire (20, 20a, 20b) is inserted into the colon and then the irrigating tube (14) is slid over or along the guidewire (20, 20a, 20b). Fluid is directed through the irrigating tube (14) to the treatment site or sites in the colon. |
