PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform the optimum combustion control corresponding to environment conditions when warming-up of exhaust gas purifying catalyst is demanded. SOLUTION: When warming-up of catalyst is demanded, stratified combustion by compression stroke injection is performed from the start. However, if air density is low, stratified combustion by compression stroke injection is inhibited, and homogeneous combustion by suction stroke injection or twice injection combustion by suction stroke injection and compression stroke injection is performed to ensure start property and avoid worsening of operation property.
