PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonwoven fabric for battery separators, excellent in alkali resistance, oxidation-degradation resistance, hydrophilicity and electrolyte retainability and capable of being thinned so as to follow miniaturization of alkali batteries, and to provide a fiber composing the nonwoven fabric. SOLUTION: The subject conjugated fiber comprises a polyamide comprising a dicarboxylic acid component whose≥60 mol% is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a diamine component whose≥60 mol% is 1,9-nonanediamine or combination of 1,9-nonanediamine and 2-methyl-1,8-octanediamine, and a thermoplastic polymer incompatible with the polyamide.
