Aliphatic diol monoacetates, e.g. 4-acetoxy-2-hydroxy-2-methyl pentane, are prepared by reacting aliphatic diols having one secondary and one tertiary hydroxyl group with ketene at a temperature between - 20 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. with mixing and in the absence of a catalyst. Ketene prepared by the decomposition of diketene is used and preferably the ketene feed is discontinued at from 70-95% conversion of diol, to avoid contamination by ketene polymers. |
