A thick back-plate or wall (13) may be covered with a pattern of blocks or plates (3-11) of various materials. Blocks may be omitted from the interior of a large aperture which may have an irregular-shaped edge. Blocks which lie partly outside and partly inside the aperture are present and are sliced by a cutting tool to make the contours of the edge of the aperture. The parts of the blocks outside the contour remain in place, while the parts inside the contour may be removed. Blocks may be divided up into half-sized blocks.
