1,002,794. Casting rods. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. March 31, 1964 [April 4, 1963], No. 13226/64. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] In a method of casting, particularly uranium carbide, uranium dicarbide, thorium dicarbide and alumina, granular material is melted in a mould in such a manner as to leave along the wall of the mould a layer of unmelted grains forming a protective cushion during cooling. The layer is subsequently removed from the casting. Particulate material is supplied to a continuous casting mould 1 by way of an electrically vibrated plate 21 and is melted by an electron beam 11, the apparatus being enclosed in a container 12 having a rarefied argon atmosphere. The coating is withdrawn by a starter bar 6. The mould may be vibrated by electromagnetic means 30 and the particulate layer 15 removed by machining. Shapes such as tubes may be made, the incomplete melting being achieved by relative movement of the mould and the heat source.
