Each of the pipe ends (2, 3) to be connected is provided with two grooves, the first suitable for the insertion of a sealing ring, the second used for engaging with the edges of the connecting device (4). The device (4) is assembled of a ring and two outer shells with lateral flanges (18) for being screwed together. Each of the shells is divided into segments by axial positioned bridges. If a branch is required the shell and the inner ring are removed, a hole drilled into a segment and the branch welded to the unit (1).
