A vehicle pneumatic tyre comprises an air tight inner layer, a rubberised carcass which contains a strengthening carrier, outer rubber running strips with radial profiled grooves, and a reinforcing belt layer between the running strips and the carcass. The belt layer contains the rubberised metallic carrier. Only the surface of the air tight inner layer is irradiated, chemically or thermally treated, so the solubility of gases in the modified layer is reduced. The surface of the inner layer is modified after vulcanisation, or by chemical reaction with halogens, eg fluorine.
