A unit (1) for treating fluids, especially contaminated water, comprises first and second electrodes (22, 24) defining between them a flow path along which, in use, the fluid can flow, the flow path extending generally along at least a part of a surface of at least one of the electrodes (22, 24). In a method of treating a fluid, the fluid is caused to flow whilst simultaneously applying a voltage across those electrodes to generate an electrolytic current therebetween. The fluid flow carries away from the electrode surface(s) solid material and/or gas formed during the treatment. The fluid may be subjected to UV-irradiation simultaneously or sequentially with the electrolytic treatment. Contaminants present in the fluid may be broken down by the method and/or converted into solid materials which may be removed from the treated fluid by suitable means.
|
