1,003,541. Pivots. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. Jan. 16, 1963 [March 8, 1962], No. 2013/63. Heading E2F. In a pivot joint comprising a socket 11 with a reduced diameter neck 22 and a stud having an enlarged head 19, 20 positioned inside the socket at the end remote from the neck and a shank 15 which passes through the neck and is secured to a link member 12, the shank is surrounded by a plastics liner 25 non-rotatably mounted in the socket and having a flange 26 seated against the stud head and an unstressed length greater than the distance between the head and the link 12 so that when the link is assembled on the stud the liner is forcibly shortened and creates a seal between the link and the liner. The plastic is preferably polythylene, nylon or a high molecular weight polyamide. The outside surface of the liner is provided with a plurality of longitudinal ribs 25b (not shown) which co-operate with a resilient bushing 21 to prevent relative rotation between the liner and the bushing, and the inside surface 25a of the liner has a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the shank 15, or alternatively has a plurality of longitudinal grooves, to provide a grease film between the liner and the shank. Grease grooves are also provided in the bottom surface of the flange 26. The socket may be tapered, as shown, or cylindrical, and the stud head 19, 20 may be part-spherical. |
