To apply letters or symbols to sheet metal plates, the characters are in the form of transparent plastics sections (20.1) with a printed plastics film (40.1), singly or in groups with a flange (21.1) around them. The plastics sections are inserted into passage openings (11.1) from the rear side (12) of the sheet plate (10), so that the flanges lie on the rear side of the plate and are held in place.
