The notching device (1) notches the spine (2a) of a book block (2). To cut deep notches (3), a cutting set (15a, 15b) of cutters (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d) is used. The cutters are offset on the tool carrier. They may be mounted on it in a spiral online on the endface or on the jacket side. The carrier may be driven by a servo motor (11).
