A magnetic head (1) is constituted by depositing two return yokes (8a, 8b), and two coils (6a, 6b) to sandwich a main pole (4) on a substrate (2), polishing an end surface extending in a deposition direction to form an opposite surface (12), and forming an auxiliary yoke (10) in the opposite surface (12). The auxiliary yoke (10) has a rectangular opening for exposing a tip surface (4a) of the main pole (4) to the opposite surface (12). An end surface (10a) of the opening faces the main pole (4) in noncontact therewith through a predetermined gap. <IMAGE>
