The lubrication system, for a sewing machine, has an upper container (18) with lubricant at eye level, for an upper lubrication point. A lower container (20) in the base plate (10) has lubricant for a lower lubrication point, and especially the looper (22). A connecting channel (32) between the containers feeds lubricant to the lower container by gravity. The lower container has a float (34) which closes the outflow from the channel when the lower lubricant level is at the full height.
