An assembly (10) applies a liquid or paste coating to a moving paper web, in which the paper passes through a curtain coating (20) station located beneath a suitable discharge tank (17). The assembly has one or more supplementary air bubble bleed stations (14). The air bleed stations (13, 14) are positioned either in series and/or parallel and are vacuum de-gasifiers. The height interval between the gas bleed stations is equal to or greater than 2 m.
