A trash can 20 comprises an outer shell 22 having an upper end and further comprising a lid 26 pivotally coupled to the upper end of the outer shell 22, wherein the pivot axis of the lid 26 may be positioned within the outer shell 22. A pivot bar 98, which defines the pivot axis of the lid 26, may be removable so as to allow detachment of the lid 26 from the outer shell 22. The outer shell 22 may also have a lower end and a base 36 secured thereto, a pedal 34 being pivotally coupled to the base 36 and a link rod 40 connecting the pedal 34 and the lid 26, wherein the entire link rod 40 may be positioned within the outer shell 22. An elastic element, which may have a curved portion 60, may be coupled to the base 36 and apply a varying force to dampen the closing of the lid 26. A second elastic element, which may have a curved portion 64, may be coupled to the base 36 and apply a varying force to dampen the opening of the lid 26. |
